FED: Costello says the GST will not increase petrol price

Federal Treasurer PETER COSTELLO has vowed that petrol prices won't go up under the GST.

The promise comes despite rising world prices and a review of fuel excise due next year.

Mr COSTELLO has told the Nine Network the government will reduce the excise so that
when the GST comes in, the price of petrol won't change.

Country Fire Service volunteers have rescued a man trapped under a ride-on lawnmower
south-east of Adelaide.

A CFS spokesman says the man was mowing his lawn at Crafers when the lawnmower went
down a five-metre embankment just before 1pm.

The mower landed on top of the man. He's been treated for minor injuries.

NSW: Man critical after shootout with police

SYDNEY, April 17 AAP - A man is in a critical condition in hospital after a shootout with
police who pulled him over for running a red light in a southern Newcastle suburb early today.

Senior Constable Tony Tamplin, police media liaison officer in Newcastle, said a highway
patrol officer had also been injured in the shootout at Whitebridge at about 12.30am.

The officer had been treated in hospital for a bullet graze to his back and shock, he said.

Sen Const Tamplin said two male officers had followed a four wheel drive vehicle for some
distance trying to get it to stop.

"It was not a high speed chase, but he just would not stop," said Sen Const Tamplin.

"As they followed him they noticed his number plate had been altered by black tape."

The officers followed the driver into Station Street, Whitebridge, he said.

He drove onto a dirt road at the end of Station Street, where he stopped.

"The highway patrol police got out of their car, went up to his car and told him get out.

"As he opened the door he fired a shot from a rifle at police."

The bullet grazed the back of one of the officers, who then fired a shot as he stumbled
backwards.

The other police officer also fired several shots at the car and the man was hit a number
of times.

It was believed he was shot in the chest area, Snr Const Tamplin said.

He was taken to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital.

The second officer was not hurt.

The national road toll for the Christmas-New Year holiday period stands at 68, with one
death in New South Wales and two deaths in Victoria overnight.

A 34-year-old man died when his utility left the road and rolled at Manilla, in
north-western New South Wales.

Victorian police say a woman in her late 50s was killed when she was struck by a car in
Rowville, in Melbourne's outer east.

And a cyclist has been killed in a head-on collision with a Ferrari sportscar at Mount

WA:Puddy murderer could face contempt charges

Convicted murderer CAMERON MANSELL could face contempt charges after refusing for the
third time in two days to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court to face stealing charges.

39-year-old MANSELL was due to appear in court today, via video link from Hakea prison,
to face 48 charges related to the alleged theft of more than 225-thousand dollars from
superannuation funds between January 2009 and May 2010.

Prison superintendent RICHARD BUTCHER has told the court MANSELL wants to appear in
person to face the charges and not via video link.

Magistrate JOE RANDAZZO has adjourned the matter until next Thursday at Joondalup Magistrates
Court when he'll consider whether MANSELL should face a contempt charge.

MANSELL was sentenced to life in prison in November after being convicted of the murder
of missing Perth multi-millionaire CRAIG PUDDY.
