Qld: Super computer to simulate earthquakes
Australian scientists are building a new supercomputer to help predict earthquakes.
The University of Queensland is building the latest technology SGI Altix 3000 supercomputersystem, which is capable of processing information at much higher rates than ever beforein Australia.
The computer will be at the $27 million Australian Computational Earth Systems Simulatornational research facility to be headquartered at the university.
The Queensland government has contributed $4.5 million towards the centre.
The university's Professor PETER MORA says the computer simulator will be able to helppredict where minerals can be discovered and also help forecast earthquakes.
