Vera Childers doesn't just use her squash, she wears them.
The first-time gardener with a wry sense of humor illustrated her obvious green thumbs last week by hanging a pair of 23-pound crook-necked squashes off of each shoulder, a total weight of close to 50 pounds.
The squashes joined other gargantuan veggies harvested from the about 30-foot by 20-foot plot behind her home on Robert Lane, including an 18-pound watermelon, purple cabbage the size and weight of bowling balls, and a clump of waist-high scallions measuring more than 3 inches around.
