NSW:Bali Boy returns home amid secrecy
A hessian screen has greeted a 14-year-old Australian schoolboy as he returned home
after being caught buying marijuana in Bali and spending two months in detention.
The boy from Morisset Park, near Newcastle touched down in Sydney with his father this morning.
The family has closely guarded the boy's identity throughout his ordeal - he's worn
a balaclava throughout all public appearances and the family home is now shielded from
public view by hessian bags.
The Nine Network has also vehemently denied an exclusive deal with the family, after
rumours resurfaced today.
The federal government's welcomed the teenager's arrival back in Australia and NSW
Premier BARRY O'FARRELL says, if asked, he'll seek advice on providing support to the
boy.

Ticketsoft, a software developer for movie theaters, has expanded its enterprise software with mobile internet ticketing and real- time reporting.
Effective immediately, Ticketsoft said licensees may offer the same online purchasing options they have at their web site to customers with mobile devices. Any smartphone with a javascript enabled browser may now buy movie tickets.
"We evaluated the rapidly changing mobile landscape and it was obvious the best solution was to create a single version that worked with the hottest devices. We did not want movie-goers to have to download or learn anything new just to buy tickets," says Philip Wood, President of Ticketsoft. The process is the same as traditional online ticket purchasing but confirmation numbers for will-call pickup are delivered by text message to make the process completely paperless. When given a choice, customers select text message delivery approximately 25 percent of the time. Getting movie tickets has never been easier.
According to a release, Ticketsoft has also launched a new version of its Theatre Circuit Board application so operators can monitor theatre performance from their mobile device. Current and historical show times, occupancy, grosses, sales, staffing levels and various key performance indicators are readily available for any theatre or the entire company.

FED:Economy in doldrums under Labor: opp'n
CANBERRA, Aug 3 AAP - A likely decision to leave interest rates on hold recognises
parts of the economy are "in the doldrums" under Labor, coalition frontbencher George
Brandis says.
The Reserve Bank board on Tuesday is expected to keep its cash rate unchanged at 4.50
per cent following benign underlying inflation data.
Senator Brandis said no move would acknowledge that times were still tough in some
sectors, such as tourism and retail.
"I think that will in part reflect a recognition that there are some parts of the economy
particularly here in Queensland ... where the economy is absolutely in the doldrums,"
he told Sky News on Tuesday.
Small Business Minister Craig Emerson said Labor had achieved a good "economic story",
with low net debt and lower interest rates.
The coalition's planned spending cuts would ruin that, he said.
"We need to maintain some stimulus.
"Tony Abbott's economic prescriptions would plunge the Australian economy into recession,"
he said.

Fed: Defence to release inquiry into loss of HMAS Sydney
CANBERRA, Aug 11 AAP - The long-awaited report of the defence inquiry into the controversial
loss of the cruiser HMAS Sydney in 1941 will be released on Wednesday.
Defence Minister John Faulkner will unveil the report at the Australian War Memorial
in a function attended by defence chiefs and inquiry commissioner Terence Cole.
HMAS Sydney was lost with all 645 crewmen in a battle with the German mercantile raider
Kormoran off the West Australian coast on November 19, 1941.
Kormoran was also sunk but more than 300 of her crew survived, providing the only eye-witness
accounts of what happened.
They described Sydney sailing too close to the disguised raider, negating the advantage
of her more powerful guns.
Kormoran opened fire, inflicting catastrophic damage. Sydney was last sighted on fire
disappearing over the horizon.
A parliamentary inquiry conducted in 1998 and 1999 canvassed the circumstances of Sydney's
loss in significant detail and also recommended a search be conducted.
In March last year, the wreckage of both vessels was discovered some 112 nautical miles
off the WA coast in waters around 2.5 kilometres deep. Damage to Sydney appeared consistent
with the German survivor accounts of the action.
The defence commission of inquiry took detailed evidence from naval experts who examined
images of damage to the the sunken vessels and also heard from the small number of surviving
Kormoran crew members.

Fed: Paid maternity leave would help address pay gaps: Greens
The Australian Greens say introducing a national paid maternity leave scheme would
help address the vast pay gaps between men and women.
New research shows Australian men have the potential to earn around one million dollars
more than women over their lifetime.
A report from AMP Financial Services shows a 25-year-old man's potential earnings over
the next 40 years is 2.4 million .. compared to 1.5 million for a woman of the same age.
And a man with children who holds a bachelor degree or higher will earn around 3.3
million .. compared to 1.8 million for a woman in the same boat.
Greens senator SARAH HANSON-YOUNG says the problem's worse for women with children.
She says introducing paid parental leave in this year's budget would ensure the gender
pay gap doesn't disadvantage younger women.

Fed: Jockeys want a better deal

Fed: Jockeys want a better deal
CANBERRA, Aug 29 AAP - Australia's jockeys will launch a national campaign today calling
on the racing industry to provide protection for the country's 860 professional riders.
The Australian Jockeys' Association (AJA) is seeking a one per cent increase in prize
money to fund an insurance and personal accident scheme for jockeys.
"Australian jockeys are among the lowest paid in the world," AJA chief executive Paul Innes.
"They ride because they love the sport but they deserve basic protections.
"That's why we are asking for a small proportion of the racing industry's prize pool
to be set aside for the jockeys who put their lives on the line when they saddle up."
Mr Innes said the one per cent increase in prize money would be directed to the AJA
and used to cover jockeys' compulsory public liability premiums, fund a national personal
accident scheme for jockeys, support jockeys and their families in financial hardship
due to death, illness and injury through the National Jockeys Trust and fund other welfare
programs.
"Australian jockeys are taking this issue very seriously." he said.
"It would be a shame to see it disrupt something like the Spring Carnival."
According to the AJA, 89 per cent of jockeys had at least one fall during their career
that required medical attention while more than half of jockeys earn less than $50,000
per year.
In the past nine years, jockey numbers have dropped 43 per cent.
"If jockeys are not provided basic protections more of them will leave the sport, putting
the ongoing viability of the industry at risk," Mr Innes said.
"Behind the glamour of the racing industry there is a side the general public don't see.
"Our jockeys put their lives on the line each time they race.
"They shouldn't also be expected to risk financial ruin each time they race."
The AJA will launch its campaign at Caulfield race course this morning.
Champion jockey Shane Dye, who suffered life-threatening injuries and required emergency
brain surgery following a horror fall in Hong Kong in 2006, said insurance for jockeys
was almost unobtainable.
"Insurance is hard to get because there's a lot of falls and there's not enough jockeys
to insure," he told ABC Radio.
"It's a small array of jockeys around Australia and that's all they can get.
"It's not a big working force where you can go insure 50,000 people or something like that."

Fed: New imam for Canberra to shut out Saudis
By Nick Butterly
CANBERRA, Feb 14 AAP - Canberra's peak Islamic body has appointed a new imam for the
capital amid claims the Saudi Arabian government is dividing the local Muslim community
through controversial payments to religious leaders.
AAP reported last month that Canberra's imam, who was also a full-time employee of
the Australian Tax Office (ATO), had been accused by a faction of worshippers of misusing
donations from the Saudi government's religious donation office.
Community members wrote to the ATO calling for an investigation into whether the former
imam, Mohammed Swaiti, declared regular salary payments from the Saudi Arabian government.
The cash payments were said to be made in US dollars.
The imam last month and again today declined to comment.
The letter to the ATO claimed that up to 20 imams around Australia received payments
from the Saudi government.
Critics also distributed leaflets at the Canberra mosque - situated in the heart of
Canberra's diplomatic precinct - alleging the imam was hoarding funds donated by the Saudis
for the upkeep of the mosque.
The leaflet claimed the Islamic donation office of the Saudi embassy - or Dawaa office
- was dividing Canberra's Muslim population by backing the imam against those unhappy
with what had happened with the funds.
Sabre Poskovic, president of the ACT Islamic Society, said today the body had appointed
a new imam, Yasar Atay.
It was unclear what would happen to Mr Swaiti.
Mr Poskovic said the new imam would be paid by the Islamic society, not by the Saudi government.
He said a cleric could only truly claim to represent his community if he was paid by
his community and he did not want the Saudi government interfering in the local mosque.
"Imams should be paid by the community," Mr Poskovic said.
Asked if he thought imams should be paid by their local community, Sheik Atay said:
"Yes exactly ... If I get my pay from the community I know I will be responsible for them".
"My community can ask: `Brother, we want this or that'. They have the right to ask
me about my duty and my roll."
Leaflets distributed at the mosque last month claimed that 13 years ago the then Saudi
ambassador, Abdul Rahman, gave the imam $35,000 to be spent on renovation work at the
mosque.
None of the money was said to have been passed on despite repeated approaches by members
of the mosque asking that the money be released to pay for maintenance work.
The letter to the ATO complained that Mr Swaiti, who is of Palestinian decent, was
radical in his preaching, telling followers not to make friends with non-Muslims and that
they would burn in hell for sending Christmas cards.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer claimed early this year that funds from Saudi Arabia
intended for a mosque in Adelaide had been blocked by the federal government because of
concerns the money was from extremist groups.
In a rare press statement issued the next day, the Saudi embassy said it was "shocked"
by Mr Downer's comments and complained that advice was always sought from the Department
of Foreign Affairs and Trade before any Saudi financial assistance was given to Islamic
bodies in Australia.
A spokesman for Mr Downer later said the foreign minister had been misunderstood and
he had not intended to criticise the Saudi government.
The Saudi embassy said it was unable to comment because the ambassador was away.

Qld: Man told wife of romantic surprise before stabbing her
By Suzanne Klotz
BRISBANE, April 21 AAP - A man blindfolded his wife and told her he had a romantic
surprise for her before stabbing her in the stomach, a court has been told.
Saiyad Jabbar, 27, of Regents Park on Brisbane's southside, pleaded guilty today in
the Brisbane District Court to causing grievous bodily harm with intent on October 4,
2004.
The court heard Jabbar had arrived home early and told his wife Shabana Nisha that
he had an early birthday present for her.
Prosecutor David Meredith told the court that he took her into their bedroom, laid
her on the bed, tied her hands with a scarf and blindfolded her with another one and then
put the romantic 1994 chart topping hit, I Swear, by the band All-4-One, on the CD player.
Mr Meredith said he then kissed her on the forehead and sang the last verse of the
song to her, before he jumped on her and stabbed her in the stomach.
Shabana, now aged 26, struggled with him and managed to hit him over the head with
a perfume bottle before running out into the street and getting help from a passing postman.
Shabana, a Fijian Indian who had an arranged marriage with Jabbar in 2001, suffered
a three centimetre wound to her abdomen and a laceration to her bowel.
They lived in a luxury house and she had been under the illusion that they had a happy marriage.
Jabbar -- who had worked in a call centre -- had told Shabana he had a new job with
the Commonwealth Bank, even going to the lengths of fabricating a letter which said he
would eventually earn $200,000 a year.
Mr Meredith said the motive for the attack appeared to be the unravelling of a web
of lies that Jabbar had told his wife -- particularly because they were due to leave for
a holiday in Fiji which he couldn't pay for.
"The event is inexplicable other than as an attempt to hide his lies and thereby avoid
disappointing his wife," Mr Meredith said.
The couple have since separated and Shabana lives in fear of her husband at a secret address.
Judge Ian Wylie adjourned the sentence indefinitely for a current psychiatric report
because he wanted to take Jabbar's recovery into account in sentencing.

Fed: Downer backs PM's decision to meet with moderate Muslims
SYDNEY, Aug 19 AAP - Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has backed the prime minister's
decision to invite only moderate Islamic leaders to a meeting in Canberra.
John Howard will meet with 14 Islamic leaders on Tuesday to discuss how to stop religious
leaders from inciting violence and terrorism.
He excluded some of Australia's more radical Muslim leaders from the national summit,
saying he wanted to marginalise extremism.
Mr Downer today said it was appropriate for the prime minister to meet only with moderate
Islamic leaders.
He said the government did not intend to give extremists a platform to air their views.
"I think that moderate Muslims should sit down with the prime minister and the Australian
government and we should work through the messages of moderation and tolerance," Mr Downer
said.
"I don't think we should be empowering extremists. I don't think we should be giving
a platform to extremists."
Mr Downer said he was a tolerant person, but this did not extend to fundamentalists
intent on taking innocent lives.
"I tell you, you know, there's a limit to even my goodwill, good nature and tolerance," he said.
"And that limit is, you know, people like Nazis and fascists and Islamic extremist,
Islamic fundamentalists who want to destroy our society and who applaud the killing of
innocent civilians."

INFORMAL HEALTH COUNCIL : DESIGNER DRUGS: WARSAW PROMOTES ITS LEGISLATION.
At the initiative of the Polish EU Presidency, the 27 health ministers held their first-ever debate on the dangers of designer drugs at an informal Council, on 5-6 July in Sopot, Poland. Warsaw made it clear that it intends to promote at European level its very restrictive national drug legislation.
The country can boast of being among Europe's leaders in this field. Last October, it adopted a law - judged very effective by experts - prohibiting the production and distribution of all psychotropic or mind-altering drugs, with violations fined from 5,000 to 250,000. These so-called designer drugs are stimulants with a variety of chemical compositions, sold legally before promulgation of the new law in specialised shops and on the internet under misleading names.
According to Polish Health Minister Ewa Kopacz, several fellow ministers expressed an interest in legislation inspired by the Polish example (among them Ireland, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Italy, Romania and Cyprus), which would prohibit certain of these drugs on a preventive basis. "The biggest problem is the distribution of designer drugs over the internet," she said at a press conference after the meeting. "We would like to take action at European level to combat this channel of distribution." Deputy Health Minister Adam Fronczak added that "banning these substances in just one member state makes no sense. We have to work on adopting a law applying to the Union as a whole." The Polish authorities also announced that Prime Minister Donald Tusk had written a letter on this subject to Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso last October. The Commission, under the authority of Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding, is drafting a report that is expected to be made public in the coming weeks.
The fight against designer drugs is the Polish Presidency's top priority in the area of home affairs. The informal Justice and Home Affairs Council, on 18-19 July in Sopot, will provide an opportunity for further discussion of this issue and will kick off work to draft a European pact on designer drugs.
HEALTH AND CHILDREN
Following on from the ministers' debates at this session, conclusions are set to be adopted at the formal Social Affairs Council, on 2 December, on: 1. preventing communication disorders in children (Minister Kopacz announced unanimity on this subject at the informal Council; the aim is to set up reference centres at national or regional level for detection and early treatment of these disorders, based on European standards); 2. reducing inequalities between member states by acting on health determinants (promotion of healthy diet, physical activity and combating obesity); and 3. preventing respiratory disorders in children (preventing and controlling allergies and asthma).
E.coli
In the wake of the E.coli epidemic, European policy should aim to be more diligent on surveillance of imported products. In the wings of the Council, the head of Poland's health authority, Przemyslaw Bilinski, suggested controls on food products at the source, ie at the place of production. Controls are effected today only on samples taken at the EU's borders and not on all imported products. For Jaroslaw Pietras, Polish director of the Council's Secretariat-General, "it is still too soon to say whether there will be any proposals in this area". However, if such legislation is considered in the future, the question will be to determine who will pay for the additional controls. According to a member of the Polish representation in the Council in charge of such issues, "it is clear that the cost would fall on producers and consequently be passed on to consumers".
Sleeping Bags Specialist Stocks New Care Plus Tick Test.
LONDON, June 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- (RPRN) -- Leading UK sleeping bags and outdoor specialists Packyourbags Travel Store increases its health care product range to include the new Care Plus Tick Test.
(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110622/NY23928LOGO )
Until recently Packyourbags Travel Store only sold Care Plus's Tick-Out Tick remover; a tool that allows the careful removal of ticks. However it now stocks the newly launched Care Plus Tick Test Lyme Borreliose. This enables those who have been bitten and removed a tick, to test it to see whether it is carrying any harmful bacteria such as Borreliose bacteria.
Whilst there are several diseases which can be caught from ticks, one that is becoming more widespread in Europe is Lyme disease, which is caused by ticks carrying Borreliose bacteria.
If a test shows positive, then individuals are able to take immediate action and visit their doctor to get prescribed the correct antibiotic treatment. Previously those infected would only be able to take action once a red ring (Erythema migrans) appears which is too late as the infection is already chronic.
Packyourbags Travel Store stocks a wide range of health products to help protect against health risks whether at home or travelling overseas. Their travel health section includes items such as insect protection, treatment for bites, water purifiers, first aid kits, washing & hygiene equipment, mountain survival products, blister treatment & blister care, sun creams, dehydration treatment, plus many more.
Shopping online at Packyourbags Travel Store couldn't be simpler, searching and locating products is quick and easy, as is the check-out facility, plus the majority of products sold are generally cheaper than their normal retail price. In addition to this, Packyourbags Travel Store operates an incredibly fair no quibble returns policy providing items bought are returned within 21 days of purchase.
Packyourbags online travel store sells everything related to travel and outdoor pursuits, such as camping equipment, sleeping bags, rucksacks, walking boots and more. The other great benefit is the high quality brands Packyourbags Travel Store offer, choose from the likes of Snugpak sleeping bags, Meindl walking boots and Lowe Apline backpacks to name a few.

SittingAround.com Launches Innovative Babysitting Site.
Seattle, WA (PRWEB) June 03, 2011
SittingAround.com, an innovative new option for childcare, launched to the public on Wednesday, June 1st. By making a well-run babysitting cooperative accessible to anyone with an internet connection, SittingAround will dramatically improve the way Americans consume childcare and save the average family $500 per year.
To celebrate its launch, SittingAround is waiving its $15 annual subscription fee for everyone who signs up prior to June 30th and giving those users free site access for the life of their account.
What is a Coop?
Babysitting coops (pronounced co-ops) are small groups of parents in a neighborhood who trade babysitting, taking turns watching each other's children. Often, coops are comprised of parents whose children go to the same daycare or school. Because each coop chooses who may join, parents only trade sitting with other parents they know and trust.
"For most parents, this is a brand-new concept," says Erica Zidel, Founder and CEO. "Less than a quarter of parents are familiar with coops, but when you tell them that there is a way to get free, easy to coordinate, high quality babysitting, their eyes light up. We want to tell as many parents as possible that coops are a great option for childcare."
A Website that Make Coops Easy
While the basic concept of coops is simple, there is a lot of administrative work required to run a coop successfully: tracking points, scheduling sits and meetings, vetting new members, maintaining current member contact info, etc. "When you manage a coop on SittingAround.com, our software automates the administrative tasks for you," says Zidel. "Our site lets parents enjoy the benefits of a well-run cooperative without the hassle."
SittingAround.com makes it easy to start, manage, and grow babysitting cooperatives.

They made me an offer I can't refuse.(FACE TO FACE)
So how many of you have close millionaire friends living in Nigeria; or wealthy long lost relatives in the United Kingdom, or intimately know members (named Smith) from a Board of Governors of a country that you never even heard of that want to share their fortunes with you?
Or maybe instead of your kid's elementary school class writing letters to a relative bravely serving our country in Afghanistan, some lonely Staff Sgt. stationed in an area where due to security reasons the United States Army blacks out any and all cell and internet signals, easily contacts you because this one enlisted man figured out a way to breach the Army's air wave and cell signal jammers and gets out an email to you about how he wants to send you money so that you can forward it to his family living in a tent back in Bismarck, ND...no questions asked.
How about the nun from Belfast, Ireland, who is suffering from terminal colon cancer for the past 10 years, and wants to share her $10.75 million estate with you provided you promise to put it solely towards the Lord's work for her ... of which you can keep a 20% "Vig" for your effort (if nuns are earning in the seven figure neighborhood you can call me what you want but I'm taking an oath of celibacy, buying a yardstick, and putting on a black and white dress).
Whatever happened to the good ole days when the only spam emails I ever received were from strangers who want to help me increase the size of, well, err; you know the emails I'm speaking of. Times sure have changed, and so have the days of our lives ... internet style! Now, every day I receive an email from people claiming that through some labor intensive, arduous and mind straining process, have selected ME, yes me, to share their hard earned life savings with. Now I can probably concoct a million reasons why I'm a nice guy and how people may want to say a few pleasant words about me after my demise, but for strangers to want to shower me with loads of cash and prizes via the internet? I don't think so. So maybe these emails are a "fugazy" (like we used to say in the ole neighborhood)?
According to the privately funded National White Collar Crime Center, internet fraud will soon cost consumers and insurance carriers $1 Billion a year, as these figures are currently rising at an incredible rate of speed. Based in West Virginia, the NWCCC has formed a partnership with the FBI, and tracks Internet crime around the world. The Center reports that Americans lost a record amount to Internet fraud schemes last year, and the notorious "Nigerian 419" scam is blamed for the largest individual losses.
Named by the FBI, the Nigerian 419 scam is called just that because it originated in that Nigeria, where Section 419 of the Nigerian Criminal Code deals with fraud. Five years ago, Nigeria commissioned what they called the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate internet crimes and prosecute those who commit them. This organization claims to have very successfully eliminated the large majority of "home-grown scammers" and has recovered more than $750 million for victims worldwide. Because of its extremely successful conviction rate, commission head Nuhu Ribadu claims that most scam e-mails now originate elsewhere in Africa or in Eastern Europe. Although these modern day snake oil salesman have moved elsewhere, the name has remained with them. For those whose origin could be traced, 61% reside within the United States, 16% are in the United Kingdom, and 6% are from Nigeria.
In you are not familiar with this particular scam (although there are many variations); the Nigerian 419 basics are familiar to almost everyone who uses email. In an unsolicited e-mail, an alleged African official says he needs the recipient's help in transferring millions of dollars from the bank account of a deceased African leader, company official or senior government officer. If you, the recipient of the email, offers to aid them in their transaction to move the money to the United States by providing cash that the "transferor" says is needed to cover up front costs in order to complete the deal. Of course, if you pay as requested, the "official" then requests more cash as the deal encounters conjured up hitches.
The United States Secret Service estimates that annual losses within our country alone attributed to the Nigerian 419 are in the neighborhood of hundreds of millions of dollars. These funds are collected by Internet and regular mail variations of the con.
What is even more amazing than the people who invent these scams, are the level of people who fall prey to them. According to statistics published by a number of internet fraud investigating organizations throughout the world, it is not just retired seniors who are victimized, as many educated professionals who also are consumed by greed and lose their sensible minds. So many people are being lured in every day, that a website www.scamvictimsunited.com has been developed and their focus is to warn folks about the scams being circulated, and offer assistance and direction if you happen to be victimized.
Federal statistics indicate that Americans reported losing an all-time high of $550 million in 2009 from Internet fraud; $250 million in 2008; $225 million in 2007; $198.4 million in 2006, $68 million in 5005. However, they also cautioned that these numbers are really higher, because a large of victims do not report the crimes because they are either embarrassed or are afraid of retaliation. With an average loss of to the Nigerian 419-type scams of $5,100, many people feel that rather than be embarrassed by reporting their loss they rather just chalk it up to experience. Each year, however, the average loss has increased about $100 per incident so inflation and rising costs are affecting even the wealthiest of scammers.
Another favorite of those who commit these heinous crimes is an extortion type plot known as "The hit-man scheme". This one involves the perpetrator sending a life threatening note to the victim, warning them that he or she will be killed unless a ransom of thousands of dollars is paid. The FBI calls it a "recent high activity scare" that began appearing in e-mail inboxes last December. Some demands are as high as $20,000 or more.
Similar to most scams, the hit-man email is usually penned with poor or broken English, and full of many misspellings, and typically reads as follows: "I have followed you closely for one week and three days now.... Do not contact the police or F.B.I. or try to send a copy of this to them, because if you do I will know, and might be pushed to do what I have being paid to do."
Although the FBI has received about 159 complaints into their Internet Crime Complaint Center since the scam appeared, they have no reports of money loss or murder threats that were carried out. This scam is believed to be not as successful because most people believe that someone would be more willing to make them wealthy, than kill them. The Internet Crime Complaint Center is a joint venture between the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center that has been tracking internet fraud for 6 years now is an agency that trains law enforcement officers to combat economic and cyber crimes. Out of all the complaints that the Internet center referred to law enforcement agencies for investigation, Internet auction fraud accounted for the highest volume, with 45 percent of complaints.
Most internet complaints are about Internet auction fraud and usually involve instances of a victim who buys a good or service through an online auction but never receives the merchandise from the seller after making payment. It may also work in the reverse, where the victim sells a good through an auction, ships the goods, and the buyer doesn't pay. Complaints regarding non delivery of items purchased on the Internet were in the second place, followed by Internet-related check and credit card fraud.
Hiding behind the anonymity that the internet affords, criminals are finding more complicated means of defrauding customers because like any other crime it becomes a matter of whom out smarts whom, and how much money may be made before law enforcement catches on. California produces more internet fraud victims than residents of any other state, with most victims of non-delivery of merchandise ordered through websites and "advance-fee scares," such as the 419 Scam.
However, not all internet fraud is attributable to a victim actually handing over cash. There are computer viruses being rapidly circulated that are extremely capable of secretly downloading passwords and account numbers without the user even knowing that they received a virus.
Spread through e-mail attachments, the viruses enable criminals to steal from bank and credit card accounts, and access online merchant accounts where they can purchase goods, have them shipped to a virtually untraceable location, and of course paid for by the true account holder. This is also not limited to items such as toaster ovens and televisions, as the Internet Crime Complaint Center has received hundreds of reports where victims complained of paying for vehicles and motorcycles that never arrived. Typically the buyer is asked to deposit the payment for the vehicle in a fraudulent financing center, which is of course suggested by the seller.
To avoid these scams and to protect yourself from these thieving type of emails, make certain to install up-to-date computer firewalls, use only reputable payment centers to make purchases online, and do not respond to unsolicited e-mails or popup ads, or letters from nuns.
By the way, (and the timing could not have been any better) as I was writing this column I received this letter in an email. Of course not to leave anyone out, I thought I would share it with all of you as I want everyone to share in the good fortune that this letter tells me that I am going to receive:

All was quiet on the convention front the past two weeks, but on some recent road trips it was great to see folks like George Emerling from Emerling Agency in Williamsville, NY; Christine Flood from Eastern General Insurance in Rochester, NY; Charlie Youngers and Delores Faulks from George H. Youngers & Son in Amherst, NY; and Leslie Rogoff and Grisela Crespo from Madison Avenue Brokerage in Manhattan, NY. Also, thanks to Dave Lande from Century Coverage in Valley Stream, NY, for braving a cold, rainy night (actually it was about an hour because the game was called at 8:00 PM) at Yankee Stadium with me.
Next time we'll be talking about "Buffalo I Day" which is always a very well attend event complete with a sold out trade show, excellent continuing education courses, and a luncheon that always selects some of the most interesting and famous speakers. If you happen to be attending that conference and if you want to "learn how to sell more, manage less, & forecast sales more accurately", visit me in the FSC booth and I'll show you how ... you may even win a great prize!
Until then, "Ciao for now" ... and don't take any wooden internet nickels!

Novell expands its control over NT nets.(Novell Directory Services for Windows NT 2.0)(Product Announcement)
NDS for NT 2.0 hits open beta stage; company is targeting branch office sites.
Provo, Utah
Novell is hoping to branch out to branch offices with a new version of its NDS for NT directory software.
There are two main differences between the new edition of Novell Directory Services (NDS) for NT 2.0, which Novell last week said is heading into an open beta program, and the previous version.
First, Version 2.0 runs natively on Microsoft's network operating system. Second, the new edition gives network administrators tighter control over NT Server 4.0 resources using Novell's NWAdmin front-end directory management tool.
The target market for NDS for NT 2.0 is the branch office that uses NT for its primary net operating system and as an application platform, says Adam Smith, a Novell product marketing manager.
"With over one-third of all NT sales going into the branch office, we had to upgrade the product to work better in that setting," Smith says.
Version 1.0, released late last year, has been widely accepted in corporate environments as a tool for managing mixed NetWare and NT networks. But it hasn't made a dent in the branch office market because the current version requires the existence of a NetWare server sitting alongside of the NT box.
Better control over NT
NDS for NT 1.0 redirects client calls headed for NT's security database to NDS, thereby alleviating the need to administer parallel access rights for NT and NetWare users. NDS for NT 2.0 further consolidates user account administration by giving network managers the ability to create NT file shares, synchronize NT and NDS passwords, and manage all NT-based network objects, such as printers and scanners, via NDS.
Additionally, NDS for NT 2.0 lets customers run directory-enabled applications previously reserved for NetWare-only environments on top of NT Server. Such applications include Novell's ZENworks suite of desktop management tools.
The Chicago Mercantile Exchange plans to roll out NDS for NT 2.0 as part of its NetWare 5.0 migration later this fall. Jeff Miller, a senior network engineer at the Exchange, mainly wants to install NDS for NT 2.0 for granular management of NetWare and NT resources. "But picking up the ability to manage 800 client machines connected to both NetWare and NT servers using ZENworks is a huge bonus," he says.
PHH Vehicle Management Services in Hunt Valley, Md., has been using NDS for NT 1.0 for four months to manage user access to the company's NetWare file and print servers as well as NT application servers running Exchange, Internet Information Server and SQL Server.
While PHH Director of Technology Tim Talbot is interested in the new user and resource management capabilities in NDS for NT 2.0, he would like to see more integration between NDS and NT applications.
"We're dying for the ability to manage Exchange through NDS," Talbot says.
Novell has indicated that it will provide further integration with Exchange but has yet to commit to a delivery timeframe.
NDS for NT 2.0 beta code can be downloaded from Novell's Web site (www.support.novell. com/beta/public). Smith says the product will ship early in the fourth quarter.
While Novell has yet to set pricing for NDS for NT 2.0, industry analysts expect it to cost about $26 per user, as is the case with the current release.

A little tech TLC.(Business)

Lucky you. Santa delivered a new computer, digital camera, iPod or cell phone under your Christmas tree.
Now for the reality check. How are you going to care for and maintain this shiny - and expensive - device to help ensure years of trouble-free use?
We asked the experts at Yahoo! Tech, CNET.com, Geek Squad and the Virginia-based electronics retailer Crutchfield. We also checked the Internet.
We found loads of advice, including general words of wisdom.
Denver-based Geek Squad agent Nathan Ziehnert suggested people read the "quick start" guide that comes with a new device. They're often one to four pages.
"It's typically the best way to get familiar with your new equipment really fast," said Ziehnert.
Our experts said tender loving care also is in order. And there is one accessory that is quite helpful for this - especially for gadgets you bring with you, including cell phones, iPods and digital cameras.
"Cases are a good idea," said Yahoo! Tech columnist Chris Null. "The more mobile a product, the more subject to injury it is going to be."
Here are more tips for four tech products:
iPod
* Download iTunes software at Apple.com, if you don't have the latest software on your computer. It's free.
* Avoid dropping your iPod. You may scratch it or break the screen. Use a protective case or sleeve. "I like a sleeve, personally," said Dan Ackerman, senior editor for CNET.com.
* Clean your iPod with a damp cloth. Don't get water inside the device.
* Avoid leaving your iPod in the car, where temperatures can be exceedingly hot or cold.
* Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight for extended periods.
* Charge the battery every 14 to 18 days when not in use. Even when an iPod is turned off, according to Apple, it's in a sleeping state that requires juice.
Digital camera
* Delete sample shots that may come loaded on the camera. They consume memory.
* Set the time and date on your camera so you know when a photo was taken.
* Back up your photos to an external source to avoid losing valued family photos. You can back up photos to an external hard-drive or copy them to a disk. Geek Squad and others offer online backup.
* Beware of moisture. "Unless your camera is marketed as being waterproof, moisture of any kind can result in the need for costly repairs, or worse - a new camera!" according to Nikon.
* Clean your camera, but use tender loving care. Nikon suggests using a blower and/or a soft brush to remove dust and dirt from external surfaces.
Laptop/PC
* Remove trial or demonstration software pre-loaded on your new computer, including games and other "shovelware" companies shovel on to new machines. Such programs use up valuable space. "In some cases, (removing such programs) can make your computer run faster," Yahoo! Tech's Chris Null said.
* Install anti-virus and anti-spyware software. Get regular updates, which can be done automatically. Also, perform regular scans to make sure no virus or spyware has infected your computer.
* Clean your machine. You can clean your PC at home using a can of compressed air available at hardware stores. Here's what Geek Squad suggests: Turn off and unplug the computer. If the fan on the back is fuzzy, use the can to spray off the dust in a sideways direction. It helps to remove the side of the case when doing this so dust inside can escape. And it's a good to do this potentially messy task outside or in the garage.
* Consider getting a protective case if you have a laptop, such as a briefcase or backpack with a laptop compartment.
* Plug your computer into a surge protector power strip. It will shield your computer from a harmful, unexpected voltage spike.
Cell phone
* Don't drop or slam down your phone. And unless you have a clamshell phone, consider a case.
* Avoid moisture and liquids that can damage or destroy the phone. In particular, avoid dropping your phone in the toilet or bathtub, among other places. Washing machines are bad, too. Be careful if you're wearing your phone while exercising. Sweat can damage it.
* Avoid putting your phone in a bag or purse that contains perfume, lotions or a water bottle.
* Avoid extreme temperatures, including very hot or cold cars.
* Recharge your phone on a regular basis to avoid running out of juice.
* Choose your service plan carefully when buying a cell phone. You may unwittingly sign up for games, GPS or other services. "All of those things are great, but they cost a lot," said Yahoo! Tech's Chris Null.

Arab-American protesters clash at Michigan demonstration.
Byline: Tim Jones
DEARBORN, Mich . _ Sharp divisions over the war in Iraq drew hundreds of shouting and screaming Arab-American demonstrators into protests against each other in an unusual evening rush hour standoff here Monday.
The main thoroughfare of this Detroit suburb and a phalanx of police officers separated the competing rallies, which underscored the deep emotional divide within the largest concentrated Arab-American population in the nation.
On one side of Michigan Avenue, gathered around the entrance of Dearborn's old city hall, were about 600 anti-war protesters, mostly Arab-Americans from several different nations, carrying signs that read "Stop the War" and "This War is UnAmerican." Across the street stood about 150 Iraqi-Americans, some vigorously waving American flags, pounding drums or carrying banners that read "We Support Our Troops."
"Down, down Saddam. Saddam is bad," said Bohaa Aleniri as those around him booed the speakers across the street and chanted "USA, USA, USA."
One child, perhaps 4 years old and standing at the curbside, held a sign that read, "Saddam Must be Died."
The anti-war protesters, including Atef Eid, originally from Lebanon, argued that bombing Iraq will not bring peace to that country or to the Middle East.
"Why are we doing this? What for? What for?" Eid asked.
The answer from many ranged from oil to U.S. domination in the Middle East. "Support our troops _ bring them home now," said several speakers.
Arab community leaders say the majority of the 29,000 Arab-Americans in Dearborn oppose the war because they fear for their friends and families in the Middle East and worry the conflict will bring more instability to the region, and possibly another war. Iraqis in Dearborn number about 2,000, according to census figures.
Aside from a brief but inconsequential shoving incident that police quickly broke up, the clash was confined to words and gestures. When anti-war demonstrators left the city hall steps, the Iraqi contingent rushed across the street and took advantage of the live microphone to proclaim their support of the war.
Moments later a Dearborn police officer took the microphone and said, "Thank you very much. It's time to go home." The crowds peacefully complied.
